lyrics

Life was pretty sweet until my baby packed her trunk
She said, 'Darlin', it's not you, it's me'
Now I'm on the front lawn in my tighty-whities drunk
A pathetic sight for all the world to see

Don't turn your back on me
In my misery
Show a little sympathy for
A poor devil like me

I wrote my manifesto in that bar outside Modesto
You said I was a mess, though you'd seen worse
We drew a twisted bargain and you doodled in the margins
Kindness is a blessing and a curse

Don't turn your back on me
In my misery
Show a little sympathy for
A poor devil like me

The road to hell is paved with good intentions
That's a saying everybody knows
But another thing that people rarely seem to mention
If you give a damn about your fellow man
That kindness surely shows

I wrote an epic novel but the dialogue was awful
The plot was thinner than a hungry snake
The hero's motivations lacked any inspiration
And the villain's depravations all seemed fake

You sent me dirty postcards from that Kansas City stockyard
That summer you went searching for the truth
You found yourself a guru unlike anybody you knew
And now you two run a head shop in Duluth

Don't turn your back on me
In my misery
Show a little sympathy for
A poor devil like me

The road to hell is paved with good intentions
That's a saying everybody knows
But another thing that people rarely seem to mention
If you give a damn about your fellow man
That kindness surely shows

Don't turn your back on me
In my misery
Show a little sympathy for
A poor devil like me
A poor devil like me
